The best Golf destinations in the Canaries

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

With a fantastic climate, virtually year round sunshine, and an eclectic mix of beaches, volcanoes and top-notch golf courses, it is little wonder that the Canary Islands are extremely popular with tourists and golf lovers alike. With a relatively short flight time from the UK, and a wealth of hotels and resorts, the Canaries are also perfect for booking late holidays at the last minute – there are often some fantastic deals to take advantage of.

Fuerteventura holidays cater excellently to fans of golf. The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is blessed with 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, in turn making the golf courses first rate. There are four courses in total on Fuerteventura, and many more being planned or in construction. The 18-hole course of Caleta De Fuste, for example, includes three large lakes connected by a stream, each playing their part in making the course particularly tricky. A large clubhouse and restaurant means that there is something for everyone at this course.

The Las Playitas course is tucked into a coastal bay, with pleasant temperatures cooled by a gentle sea breeze creating perfect golf conditions throughout the year. So too, the course boasts impressive – and arguable distracting – views over the Atlantic that make up for a poor round at any time. The course is particularly well tended, making for a spectacular eighteen holes. Fuerteventura’s bigger sister Tenerife is home to an impressive nine golf courses, each a different challenge, depending on your handicap.

Tenerife golf courses have a strong golfing history that guests can be a part of. Golf del Sur, for example, has played host to a range of international golf tournaments and is characterized by the black volcanic sand in its bunkers and the giant cacti throughout- a reminder of the spectacular location of the course.

For particular good deals and to save some serious cash, remember that the season can make all the difference when it comes to your budget. As the weather is generally warm all year round, the Canaries is an easy and ideal destination to go on the off season. If you are able to wait to the last-minute to book your holiday, prices are likely to plummet with late deal offers that are too good to resist – it really can pay off, quite literally, to book late.

Scuba Diving Hotspots on Fuerteventura Holidays

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Many divers book Fuerteventura holidays, as the island has the reputation of being one of the best scuba diving spots in the world. This truly is a diver’s paradise as a fantastic range of marine life is attracted to the calm waves and consistently high water temperatures here with good visibility.

If you fancy learning scuba diving whilst on Canaries holidays, there are two good diving schools where you can learn this fascinating sport. One is the Deep Blue Diving Centre at Costa Caleta and the other is the Abyss Diving Centre at Corralejo. Both are run by professional divers who are PADI accredited and speak good English.

You’ll be taught the rudiments such as the safety procedures, how the equipment works and the hand signals involved before going to a pool to get used to the tanks and the weights. In the afternoon you will be taken to a safe diving spot before heading out on a dive accompanied by your tutor.

As Fuerteventura is a volcanic island, the underwater world around it is breath-taking and over time, outpourings of lava have been carved by the sea into amazing shapes. As the water temperature is still warm and prices are cheaper, many divers are attracted to the resort from around the world on last minute holidays. Its been known for shoals of groupers to accompany divers on their dive, as the fish are not frightened of humans.

Many divers head to the Isla de Lobos which is a nature reserve and has been without permanent human occupation since 1982. It’s a picturesque deserted village and the area around here is famed for its coral reefs and volcanic cornices. Ajuy Village is another famous scuba diving spot with overhangs and weird rock formations. There is also plenty of caves here to explore and the marine life here is stunning with sea anemones, sponges and many varieties of crabs.

Great Days out in Fuerteventura

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Fuerteventura is a great place to holiday thanks to its beautiful beaches, quality hotels and warm climate. But if you’re not interested in simply lying by the beach or pool all week, Fuerteventura has plenty of activities to offer. Whether you still fancy taking it easy with a round of golf or trying something more thrilling like a water park, there are plenty of great days out to be had on this Canary Island.

For a day out that will prove both fun and educational, you could go to the Oasis Park at La Lajita. Here you’ll find both a zoo and botanical gardens. As well as a couple of hundred different species of animals and birds including zebras, giraffes and monkeys you can ride a camel around the botanical gardens which are home to numerous different plants and a particularly impressive range of cacti. Camel trips are also available on the Costa Caleta and the Caleta de Fuste, while other animal-related activities available on the island include the boat trips that take you out to sea so you can try and catch sight of dolphins and whales.

If you’d like to play a little sport while on the island golf could be your best bet, as there are several fantastic courses. The greatest of which is undoubtedly the Fuerteventura Golf Club, which was the location of the 2004 Spanish Open Championship, a 71-par course that is one of the best in all of Spain. The Salinas de Antigua perhaps isn’t quite up to these high standards but is still a great course and is an especially good choice for those who are looking for something a little cheaper.

If you want a bit of excitement from Fuerteventura you could do worse than try the Baku Water Park. Located at Carralejo, the park is fairly new (constructed in 2004) and along with exhilarating water rides has a driving range, crazy golf, ten-pin bowling and an aquarium. The latter has sea lions, stingrays and sharks. While this range of facilities might seem quite random, it certainly makes for an interesting day out.

While nobody would blame you for spending your time in Fuerteventura tanning yourself on a beach, it would certainly be a shame to miss all that the island has to offer. So spend your holiday taking advantage of all that the island has to offer – it will make the time relaxing in the sun even more rewarding.
